Creating Project Plan in MS Project

Every time I create a new MPP, I ask this question to myself “How and where to start?”. I very well remember the first time I created a Microsoft project plan and I was struggling on strategy to put a plan in place. There was nobody to mentor me. It is very essential that we start right. Here is what I found very useful for me:

  1. Identify tasks and Create task list
  2. Create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  3. Group the tasks based on functional or criteria in WBS
  4. Estimate every task in the WBS
  5. Then move all this information to Microsoft Project Plan or any other project management tool or you can even do step 1-4 inside the tool. I personally love to do with paper and pencil and then move it to software.

There is a very good tutorial on creating Microsoft Project Plan with the similar approach at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/create-a-project-plan-in-5-easy-steps-HA001136153.aspx

Thanks

In Technology Projects, technical managers can perform far better! What is your opinion?

As per me in the current technology world, managers with strong technology background are more equipped to challenge teams to higher productivity levels and lead by example. I have been watching this and trying to gather data for myself from all different clients and offices I have worked in last few years. Everywhere I have seen that managers with strong technology background have more hold on the project and are more clear in their communication as they know what exactly is going in the team. From team’s side they know that there is a place they can go in hour of need hence leading to better relationship with the Manager.

This is my opinion, what is yours?

Let me ask the question again:

Personalized Google search becomes more personal

Today Google announced a new feature of STARS to give a better personalized search. This will help us to mark some results as favorite and we can get this on the top of the list whenever we search for the same thing again. It will be fantastic as lot of times I want to go back to the same old link that I goggled, but till now there was no way except bookmarks! Google will start rolling this out in coming days to all its users.

With stars, you can simply click the star marker on any search result or map and the next time you perform a search, that item will appear in a special list right at the top of your results when relevant.

Valentine’s day 2010, my idea of a gift

This Valentine as per me the best gift for my girl is my all time favorites chocolate, teddy bear and some nice decent precious gift. I spent a lot of time finding out what is the best that I will like to go for.  So here is what I finally settled with:

  • Chocolates (of-course Godiva is my all time favorite). It is a Sweet Heart Gift Set, featuring a plush Valentino the Bear and a 19 pc. Valentine’s Day Ballotin. Valentino the Bear is a snow-white, silky-soft cuddler with “Godiva 2010″ embroidered on his paw, a red bow at his neck, and an organza bag filled with 8 foil-wrapped milk chocolate hearts.  I know my wife will surely like this as she has always loved eating chocolates from Godiva.
  • A very decent gift (let her decide what she will choose). She can choose from array of especially indulgent gifts and brands that pamper, like Nick & Nora®, Woodstock Chimes®, Yankee Candle®, Upper Canada®, and Homedics®.

How can some see racist theme in alien adventure ‘Avatar’ ??

I was amazed to read a news on Yahoo

Some see racist theme in alien adventure ‘Avatar’ (AP)

avatar

I discussed this with my wife and inquired when and how during  all the minutes of the movie a person can take it to be even close to being racist. After reading the whole news on Yahoo we tried to recreate all those moments of the movie in our mind but nowhere it seems to be racist. I was under an impression that there is no racism in America but this news says something different (and I donot believe it).

You may call it racist or you may not agree to it, but one thing that we all agree to is that it is a Masterpiece movie. Surely it is going to break all the records set by Titanic!

Leaders, expect the best from team!

Expect the Best!

Expect the Best!

Good leaders don’t waste time on the weakness of the team members as they concentrate only on the strengths of others. They don’t waste too much of time on doing the postmortem of the failures of their team members. Instead they look for the strengths of the individual team members. They understand that more than anything else their attitude determines the outcome of the efforts of the entire team as it will determine the orientation of the entire team. If the leader expects good things from the team and shows the confidence on the entire team, the team members will go extra mile to live up to the expectations or to exceed it.

Remember the age old golden rule:

To be a good leader we need to learn the art of finding the good side of everyone and building on that.

That is how the brotherhood strengthens and a team is built! That is what I have successfully practiced all these years.
